| He was really a good friend. After fifty years I remember him as having a brogue equal to Barry Fitzgerald's in 'Going My Way' (although he probably didn't). Father was based at the MASH Unit just below the 38th on the way down to Uijongbu. (sorta like Fr Mulcahy on the TV show MASH). I believe he overheard me complaining about the point system. It took 36 points to get out of Korea. I was only getting 3 points a month but they were getting 4 per month on the front. Maybe I would volunteer for the front, get more points and get home sooner. One day he got me relieved from work and we stayed at his 'place'. He took me through the hospital tents. There had been some skirmishes on the line and quite a few casualties were in the recovery section. It gave me a whole new respect for the war. He had quite a stash of liquor in his tent for dignitaries like me so we got plastered before retiring. No one ever heard me complain about the point system after that night. |
