| Description: | One lazy summer afternoon, incoming shells began exploding on a hill just across the river. Everyone swung into action. Artillery sprung to, G3 Air contacted base, I diverted reconnaissance flights, Corps was alerted, Army was advised, hard helmets were donned, rifles that hadn't been touched for months found their place on shoulders and "all hands were on deck" so to speak. Tension. Most of us had never been attacked. The shelling stopped. Forty-five minutes after the incident began, we got word of an all clear. Corps HQ Intelligence informed us that a Greek mortar platoon, on the other side of the river was having a practice session. That was the sum total of my "combat" experience. Soon after that day the Korean workers built us this bunker. |
