A stately rice farmer who has seen ravaging armies joust up and down this valley several times in the last year.
| Description: | On the morning of June 25, 1950 the Korean war started, when north Korean troops invaded South Korea under the lead of General Chai Ung Jun in a surprise attack. US president Truman declared the beginning of an US intervention on June 27. However, in the meantime the South Korean capital Seoul was already taken by the north Koreans. The US defined the mission not as war, but as police action. The first American troops arrived in South Korea on July 1, and took back the capital Seoul on September 29. On October 1 the UN troops under General Douglas MacArthur crossed the 38th parallel. The UN troops were thrown back by Chinese troops, which have entered the war on October 13. Before they were thrown back, they occupied the North Korean capital Pyongyang on October 19. The following weeks the war surged in both directions, the Chinese occupied Seoul again on January 5, 1951 and lost it on March 18 of the same year.
On July 19, 1951 first peace talks started in Gaesong, but they were discontinued by the communists on August 23. New talks started on October 25, 1951 in Panmunjeom. During the long lasting negotiations heavy fights with many deaths took place. On July 27, 1953 at 10 am Lieutenant General Nam Il and Lieutenant General William K. Harrison signed in Panmunjeom an armistice agreement. Approximately 12 hours later the last fights ended. Until today there is no peace treaty.
